What’s The Deal With…?

Surf Gear Essentials

Dude, it’s simple. The sun reflects off the water, hitting you from all angles. Without proper protection, you’re looking at a nasty burn that’ll ruin your next session, or worse, long-term skin damage. Think of it as essential as wax on your board. You wouldn’t paddle out with a slick deck, so don’t paddle out without your zinc or mineral-based sunscreen. Protecting your skin means more days in the lineup chasing that endless summer.

The rule of thumb is every two hours, but listen up—you need to reapply more often when you’re getting shacked! Every wipeout, long session, or towel dry removes your protection. Tuck a small, waterproof stick in your boardies or wetsuit for a quick re-up between sets. Staying on top of it keeps you covered from that dawn patrol glare right through the evening glass-off.

For your face, a thick zinc stick is the go. It creates a solid, visible barrier that won’t sweat or rinse off easily. For the rest of your body, a rub-on lotion typically provides better, more even coverage than a spray, which can blow away in the offshore wind. Sticks are also epic for quick nose and cheek application without getting greasy hands.

This is the worst! The key is to let your face sunscreen—preferably a water-resistant zinc stick—fully dry and set before you paddle out. Give it a good five minutes. Avoid applying thick globs right on your forehead where it can easily melt and drip. Using a stick formulation designed for sports around the eyes and cheekbones creates a more stable barrier.

Nothing is truly “waterproof.“ “Water-resistant” means it maintains its SPF level for a specific time while you’re in the drink—usually 40 or 80 minutes. After that, its effectiveness drops. That’s why reapplication is crucial. Always check the label for the water-resistance time and plan to re-up accordingly. No sunscreen can survive a full four-hour session without a touch-up.

For sure, a greasy, chemical-based lotion on your hands can make your pop-up feel slick and unreliable. That’s another reason to love zinc sticks and mineral lotions that dry with more of a matte finish. If you’re applying lotion everywhere, just be mindful to wash or wipe your palms on your towel before you hit the water for maximum grip.
