What’s The Deal With…?

Legendary Surf Spots

Etiquette is survival. The rule is simple: the surfer deepest and earliest on the peak has the wave. Don’t even think about paddling for the shoulder if someone is deeper. Wait your turn, which can be a long while. Always look before you drop in. It’s a high-stakes lineup with razor-sharp reefs and big egos. Patience and clear communication are the only ways to get your wave without a hassle.

The living room floor or the beach is your training ground. Lie on your stomach, hands in position, and practice that explosive, single motion. Use a pop-up board or just a towel. Focus on speed and fluidity—no pausing in a cobra position. Visualize the wave pushing you. Dry-land reps build the muscle memory so when you’re in the soup, it happens automatically without thought. Even a few minutes a day will make a huge difference in your muscle memory and confidence.

Dude, it’s all about consistency. Hit the pool for lap swimming, focusing on freestyle to mimic the motion. On land, pop-ups and burpees build explosive power. But nothing beats time in the brine. Paddle out even on small days, focusing on strong, deep strokes. Think “reach and dig.“ Your shoulders and back will scream at first, but they’ll get stoked on the strength. More paddle power equals more waves under your belt and less getting caught inside. It’s the ultimate ticket to longer, more rewarding sessions.

Mastering the Waves

Panic is your real enemy. When you get worked, relax during the first plunge. The ocean will push you up; don’t fight it and waste oxygen. Cover your head with your arms as you surface to protect from your board. Take one quick breath before the next wave hits, then tuck up and go with the turbulence again. Trust that your buoyancy will bring you up. Staying calm is everything.

Oh, you’re gonna get worked. It’s part of the deal. The key is to relax. Don’t fight it. Go with the turbulence, and cover your head with your arms. If you feel the spin, try to figure out which way is up and swim in that direction. A good breath-hold practice out of the water helps. Always know your limits and surf within them. Getting pounded on shallow reef is a whole different story than a deep sandbar. Respect the spot and you’ll live to surf another day.
