Surf Lingo Explained

A wipeout is a spectacular fall from your board, usually in a critical part of the wave. It can range from a simple tumble to a full-on “washing machine” where you get violently churned underwater. While sometimes scary, it’s a natural part of the learning curve. Every surfer has epic wipeout stories—it’s a sign you’re pushing your limits.

Glassy describes perfectly smooth ocean surface conditions, like a sheet of glass. It usually happens in the early morning before the wind picks up. Waves break with a clean, crisp face, making for ideal, predictable surfing. Glassy conditions are highly prized because they allow for smoother, faster rides and easier wave reading. It’s what every dawn patroller hopes for.

A goofy footer is a surfer who naturally rides with their right foot forward on the board. It’s the opposite of “regular foot,“ which is left foot forward. There’s no advantage to either; it’s just your natural stance, like being right or left-handed. The term is said to come from the old cartoon “Goofy” surfing right foot forward!

Surf Lingo Explained

It’s the first surf session of the day, hitting the water right at sunrise. Paddling out in the early morning light, you’ll often get glassy conditions and the waves to yourself before the crowds roll in. It’s a sacred time for many surfers, offering a peaceful connection with the ocean and the best chance at scoring clean, uncrowded waves. It sets the tone for the whole day, brah.

A closeout is when a wave breaks all at once along its entire length, instead of peeling left or right. There’s no open face to ride, so you either get a quick, bumpy straight-in before it shuts down or you get swallowed by the whitewater. It’s a frustrating wave to catch and is usually avoided by surfers looking for a longer, more rippable ride.

Your quiver is your collection of surfboards. Just like you wouldn’t use a hammer for every job, you need different boards for different waves. A typical quiver might include a shortboard for good waves, a fish for small days, and a longboard for noseriding. Building your quiver is a personal journey and a big part of the surf lifestyle.
