What’s The Deal With…?

Surf Travel Adventures

Offshore winds are the magic ingredient, man. They blow from land to sea, holding up the face of the wave as it breaks, making it stand up taller and groom the lip. This creates those hollow, tubing conditions we all dream about. Onshore winds, conversely, blow from the ocean and mush it out. Mornings often have light offshore winds before the daily thermal onshore kicks in. That’s why dawnies are so often flawless.

To link your turns like a legend, you need flow, not just random hacks at the lip. A powerful cutback starts with a solid bottom turn to generate speed and project you back toward the whitewater. Don’t just look at your board—rotate your head and shoulders to initiate the turn; your board will follow. The magic is in the rebound. As you complete the cutback, aim to hit the pocket of the wave with enough momentum to drive straight into your next bottom turn, setting you up for another section. Think of it as one continuous dance with the wave, not separate moves.

Nothing beats actually putting your hands on a board. You can feel the glass job, check the true rocker, and get a sense of its weight. In a shop, you can talk to a real human who can translate what you need—like more paddle power or better rail-to-rail speed—into a specific shape. They often have demo programs, too, so you can test-drive a board before committing. It’s about the stoke of the in-person experience and getting a board that truly fits you.

Start with the accessible classics to get the feel. San Miguel is a fun beach break near the border. For a legendary point, head to San Juanico (Scorpion Bay) for those long, peeling rights. Near Cabo, Monuments offers a rippable left point, and Zippers provides a fast, hollow right. These spots give you a taste of Baja’s diversity. Remember, half the fun is exploring the miles of coast in between for your own secret spot.

The town has heaps of options, from backpackers to guesthouses, many with epic views of the break. Staying somewhere within walking distance of the point is ideal for dawn patrols and quick checks. The town itself is super surf-centric, with great cafes, board shops, and a mellow atmosphere. It’s the perfect base to rest, refuel with a post-surf burger, and swap stories about that insane section you made (or didn’t make).

The man is a shaper’s dream and rides everything! He’s famously connected to Channel Islands, rocking models like the CI “Flyer” and the “Fred Rubble” for high-performance waves. But his quiver is deep. He’ll switch to a fish for smaller days, charge Pipe on a step-up gun, or even ride an alaia for the pure feel. His board choice is all about the conditions and his intuitive connection to the craft. He’s deeply involved in design, constantly tweaking rocker, foil, and fin setups to find that perfect blend of speed, drive, and responsiveness.
