What’s The Deal With…?

Surfboard Evolution

They’re totally legit for certain breaks! The idea is that your frontside and backside turns are fundamentally different. An asym board has a different rail shape, fin setup, or bottom contour on your toe-side versus your heel-side. For a regular footer at a right-hand point break, it can make your backside (facing the wave) more drawn-out and your frontside (back to the wave) more snappy. It’s not an everyday board for everywhere, but for a specific wave you surf all the time, it can unlock a new level of flow.

It’s not just about riding waves; it’s a full immersion. It’s prioritizing dawn patrol, having saltwater in your veins, and your schedule revolving around tides and swell. It’s worn-out wetsuits, ding repair in the garage, and road trips with boards on the roof. It’s a deep respect for the ocean, a tight-knit crew, and a mindset that values experiences over possessions. The ocean is your church, and every session is a form of meditation.

Usually, yes! Your stance tends to be consistent across all board sports. If you skate or snowboard regular, you’ll almost certainly surf regular. The muscle memory and balance are very similar. If you’re completely new to all board sports, surfing is the purest way to find your natural stance because the wave itself will tell you how you need to stand to balance and drive. It’s the original test.

Surf Travel Adventures

Put some energy back into the earth! Join or organize a beach clean-up. Donate to or volunteer with local NGOs that protect coastal areas. If you see a project fixing access paths or protecting dunes, lend a hand. It’s about being pono—righteous. The ocean gives us so much; giving back, even in a small way, is just balancing the energy. That’s how we keep the stoke alive for generations.

Fins are your control center, dude! A single fin offers smooth, drawn-out turns—classic longboard style. Thrusters (three fins) are the standard for most shortboards, giving you a perfect mix of speed and hold. Quads (four fins) are speed demons, looser and faster for down-the-line pumping. They all change how your board releases water. Swapping fins is the cheapest way to totally change your board’s feel, so experiment and see what works for your wave and style.

Your wetsuit, hands down. It’s your second skin and what lets you surf year-round in chilly barrels. A good, comfortable suit that fits like a glove keeps you warm and flexible, so you can focus on your shredding instead of the brain freeze. For warmer climates, a solid pair of boardies or a rashguard is essential. Don’t skimp here—being cold or chafed is a surefire way to cut a killer session short.
